Green Pieces
Sustainable Products

The Mission and History of Greenpieces

Green Pieces was born in 2006 in the beautiful town of Atenas, Costa Rica by 2 young Americans living abroad and wanting to make a difference in the world.  A long time believer, distributor, and spokesperson of the Keeper, Laurie Lee hoped to share the importance of using products like the Keeper instead of traditional femenine hygiene products to the local Latina women and to the American college students she was working with at the Center for Sustainable Developement. The taboo we experience in the US in terms of talking about menstration is even more prevalent in the Latino culture so many women were not interested in hearing about it (or suffering through her Spanish)!

Costa Rica is home to some of the world's best coffee.  An opportunity to help promote a local coop sell their fresh and delicious beans presented itself to Rob and Laurie Lee and they jumped to help these small town farmers.  Rob spent much of the rainy season building a barebones website to sell the coffee and keepers.  Our dear friend made us the cool coffee logo at the top of this page.  Our mission statement was

"To bring you the best tasting and highest quality of organic and sustainable products available by buying the best products straight from the growers and producers.  We are committed to doing business in a socially responsible way that benefits the growers and producers rather
than multiple corporate middle-men
."

Feedback confirmed that it is wierd to sell coffee and menstrual products on the same website, but it served its purpose!  They quickly added Costa Rican "Sock coffe makers" to thier storefront.

A nearby women's coop sold paper made from pressing cattails.  We bought their paper and made personalized Christmas cards.  The Christmas of 2006, you could buy your coffee, your menstrual products, and organic Christmas cards at Greenpieces.net!

In 2007 Laurie and Rob moved to Panama to manage an ecolodge and delve deeper into the world of Sustainable Developement.  Greenpieces was put on the backburner.

Today, the Lees live in Chicago and own a business called Swift Passport Services www.swiftpassportservices.com.  Although Greenpieces is currently limited to selling menstrual products, the Lees hope to eventually sell more can't live without products that make green living more attainable.  Any comments and ideas are welcome.
