The Keeper and the Environment
Americans use more "stuff" than anyone on earth. Each of us throws away
about 4 pounds of trash every day! That's why we have a garbage crisis.
Most of it is trucked to landfills -and there it stays. The trash you threw away
last year or 10 years ago is still there! We're running out of landfill sites. Some
communities now spend a lot of tax dollars to truck their trash out of state.
• 12 billion pads and 7 million tampons pollute landfills annually in the US.
• National Women’s Health Network
• An average American will contribute 10,000 pads and tampons to
landfills which is equal to 300 pounds of trash in your lifetime
• Cotton used to make tampons is grown with toxic pesticides that are
harmful to the environment
• According to the Center for Marine Conservation, over 170,000
tampon applicators were collected along U.S. coastal areas between 1998
and 1999.
